THE LINCOLN REVIEW
After This War
We will plant a cherry tree,
she said as her crotchet hook
knitted another knot
After this war
the radio will sing a happy song,
and we will sing along
After this war
we will not be lonely
as she kissed the prayer
book and closed her eyes
Your Padar will come back,
he will bring what you
want, but you my good boy
don’t want nothing much
We will sit out in the grass
and have a big picnic with
peaches, apples, cherries
and honeyed tea?
You know my boy,
only after this war
as she looked at me
to make sure I understood
what was to happen
in our lives
